John Owen, a theologian in the seventeenth century, said this: “You have an imaginary Christ and if you are satisfied with an imaginary Christ then you must be satisfied with an imaginary salvation.”
It seems that today many people imagine God and His Son Jesus as being very much like us or even themselves. What sort of world would it be if you or I were in charge of the amount of sunshine and rain which falls? How good would you be at regulating the temperature on our globe in space? Yes, we imagine God or Jesus to be much like we are but if they were as fickle as we are…would the Earth still be here? Or would you just begin again in another part of the universe?
Our emotions and fears would get in the way of many different things, especially those minute details of how much rain to provide to one part of the world and how much to withdraw from another? God doesn’t have fears or doubts like we do, thankfully. He doesn’t need to worry about anything at all because He is in control of time and space and all that is in the universe!
No, an imaginary Christ couldn’t provide us with an imaginary salvation of any kind because imagined salvation is just make-believe nonsense. Pretending that God is anything other than the God mentioned in the Bible is sheer lunacy. God is our Creator and our Savior as well. Giving Him our face or our skin color or our temper would reduce Him to being one of His Creation and by doing so we would remove Him from being God.
If mankind has been imagining or creating their own version of God since the seventeenth century then how much more would we do it today with all of the technology available to us? Our movies can make it seem that a man can walk on water by using computer animation. We can even place someone in a movie who has been dead for many years by creating an animated version of them and giving a voice to it.
If we can create a very convincing likeness of someone and give it speech and the ability to interact with the environment, then what would stop us from making God look and sound real enough to convince people that this “imaginary” god is real? If technology gets to the point of replacing actors and actresses with young and eternal versions of themselves, then our world will have gone into the area of creating our own gods. That in itself is a scary prospect.

The problem with an imaginary Savior is that he doesn’t care about you any more than you do. Every aspect of an imaginary god or savior is based on your idea of Who God is. Your imaginary Savior cannot give you salvation unless it is imaginary too. What a scary prospect that would be. Going through life with an imaginary savior and a make-believe God, one made up in your own mind, will get you nowhere except thrown into the lake of fire. A god of your own making is like believing in a false god because that is exactly what it is. The problem is, in our technological society, that it is so easy to create your own idea of Jesus and when you convince yourself that your god or your savior has saved you then you also have salvation which is make-believe too.
We all have them. One day you feel great and you can do anything. The next day…you feel as if you have fallen into one of the deepest pits that you could possibly find. Life is that way and it continues to be that way. Very likely it will keep on feeling that way or rather being that way for most of us until we are called home to Heaven with Jesus.
We are almost a whole month into the new year already! So what else is new you might ask? Well, our time on Earth is ticking away too. God has promised that His Son will return one day and since most of the signs which point toward that event have already happened, the only event keeping it from happening is God’s timing. He is possibly waiting for the last sinner to be saved, I don’t know which event God is waiting for.
Don’t wait until that day to seek Jesus out! Will there be others who are seeking Him? Yes, but their numbers will be far fewer than you might believe. Many people who are going to seek Him out will be wondering why was I left behind? I went to church pretty regularly and I prayed and studied my Sunday school lessons at least sometimes. What went wrong?
Don’t discount His blessings or His grace toward each of us because we don’t deserve either, but He gives them to us so that we will realize Who it is that provides for us when we haven’t asked for our provisions. God loves each of us and the proof of it is that while we were still sinners, Jesus died for us on the cross to pay our debt which we could not. He did this long before most of us were even born, yet He knew us then and He knows most of us today.
