Is it possible to be selfish and a Christian too? Yes, if you aren’t living for Jesus and for His purposes in your life.
Our selfish side is still there regardless of whether we are Christians or not. If we have not given our heart to Jesus, that part of our “old” self is and always will be there. But, there is a way to tame that part of you. Prayer and reading God‘s Word will give you the ability and the tools to be able to resist the temptation of being selfish.
Our life, especially when we are living for Christ, is about so much more than just us. It is about getting the message of Christ and what He did for us, while we were yet sinners and before we were born, out to a world that is searching for answers. The only truth that is available is from God’s Word and if they will not receive it then the fault is their own. Our job is to get the message to them, it is the Spirit‘s job to bring that seed to fruition and call them to salvation.
That is why the commission was given, to the twelve disciples and by extension to the rest of us, to go into all of the world teaching and preaching the Good News of the Gospel of Christ. When we do that, we are doing the will of Him who saved us and of the Father, our Creator.
He loves us enough to do these things and much more on a daily basis, like allowing us to live and see our children grow, to come to know Him and to know that we will be with Him. Those are just a couple of things that our Creator gives to us. Just imagine what He gives us that we don’t realize who it came from. Your job, your friends, your children every good thing that we have in this life came from Him. All of the bad things which happen to us are either caused by bad choices which we made or came as a result of Satan‘s handiwork.
We are in a war between the two, Satan and God, which we know who wins in the end! Our life should be in service to Him who is and who was and who is to come. The Alpha and Omega, the everlasting Father and the Prince of Peace, Jesus who is the Son of God but who is God as well. To be in service to Him is to be in our Father’s will, regardless of the occupation which we have to use to get paid in this life.
I will lean on Jesus to release my selfish ways. Here is a link to an entry I wrote on my selfishness.
